FRASER HEPBURN (GK) Debut
1998
The big fella is a shining example of the club's grow your own philosophy,
and has shown what determination and desire to improve can achieve.
Fraser's presence gives the defence much re-assurance, and his ability
to catch and deal with crosses sets him apart from many a keeper at
this level. Also strong on one-on ones, even if his ability at downing
in one does leave something to be desired
MATTHEW BUCKLEY (DEFENCE) Debut 2002
Buck is the most versatile of players and has playedeffectively in every
position except goalkeeper. This and his competitive nature make him
an invaluable member of the squad.
MARK BROWN (DEFENCE) Debut
2003
Ex University player was approached after impressing in the two games
against Garnett last season. "Viagara Eyes" is an experienced
centre half or right back who has previously played in Northern League.
He has quickly earned the respect of all at the club with his commitment
on and off the pitch and deserving of the vice captaincy role.
MARK MENTON (DEFENCE) Debut
2003
The elder and argueably less talented brother of Paul, Mark had an excellent
first season after joining the club form 1st Division Wallington. Mark
is a cultured and consistent left back with a good footballing brain,
as his fitness improved he became an increasingly effective attacking
option.
ADAM 'TAFF'
ALEXANDER (DEFENCE) Debut 2002
New signing this season, Taff has already been given the Reserve Team
Captaincy as a reward for his inspirational displays. Many are the forwards
who have suffered from his cunningly deployed 'reducer' in the first
few minutes of every game. A veteran of the intra-mural circuit, he
has easily made the transition to the rigours of Geordie league football.
Strong in the air, hard in the tackle and always fully committed, he
was memorably labelled an 'animal' by our friends from the RVI.
SEAN CAVANAGH (DEFENCE)
Debut 2002
Ex-Newcastle University captain Shaun has made a massive impression
since joining the Green and Black at the start of the season. The club
is delighted to have such a talented and committed player on their books.
Shaun is a physically imposing centre half with pure footballing ability,
a rare combination at any level. One of the first to pay his subs and
an ever present at training, Shaun has quickly settled in and will hopefully
stay with the club while his work keeps him in the North East.
DAVE ROBINSON
(DEFENCE/CF) Debut 2002
Trigger proved he really is a centre half after lumbering up front as
a shot shy target man, though as he never resists repeating he did score
the only goal in the 2002-03 Calvert Cup final and the 1st team's first
ever goal in the Northern Alliance. Defensive colossus, Trigger was
in outstanding form all season and only the presence of Club captain
Shaun Cavanagh has kept him out of the 1sts. Trigger is undoubtedly
one of the hardest working men in the club
DAVID
MERCER (MIDFIELD) Debut 2000
Dave is an example to all at the club. He has made himself an integral
part of the side through his sheer determination to win and improve.
Dave is the fittest player at the club and his hard tackling makes him
an ideal midfield ball winner. Dave has worked very hard to improve
his technical ability and now bares no resemblance to the raw player
who joined the club three seasons ago. Dave's commitment to the Green
and Black runs off the field where along with Tart and Rowson he has
willingly given up time to work on the pitch.
SAM KING
(MIDFIELD) Debut 2003
Midfield dynamo Sam formerly played under
Alan Wilkinson for Northumbria University. Sam is equally home in the
centre or right of midfield. Sam has turned in some excellent performances
for the Reserves and been part of the 1st team squad for much of the
season.
GAZ
HOPKINS
Club legend with over 250 appearances for the club. One of few certainties
in life, is that, if there is a Garnett game, Gaz will be there. An
excellent athlete with great pace and strength, Gaz can play in any
position on the park, with aplomb, and without complaining. Also an
excellent supplier of quality from dead ball situations. Good team man,
always reliable and committed, though sometimes one wonders just how
good he could be, given his natural ability
.
NEIL
HINDLEY (MIDFIELD) Debut 1997
Popular Neil had his best ever season in Green and Black colours, largely
due to a reassessment of his refueling habits. Always quick to make
friends with Geordies, Neil's work rate and passing have won him a regular
starting spot in manager Alan Wilkinson's 1st eleven. Neil played for
Garnett in his 1st year before leaving to play for the University but
has made a happy return. He is also the man that brought Cav, Jason
and Taff to the club.
DAVE CAVE
(MIDFIELD) Debut 2003
Super skilled Dave Cave has formerly played in Northern League for Blue
Star and despite an injury plagued season, his ability shone through.
Equally home in the centre or wide right of midfield, local lad Dave
will no doubt be a mainstay of the side for years to come.
DAVE MULLEN (MIDFIELD) Debut
2003
Bar room warrior "Bruno", is a cultured left sided defender/midfielder.
His passing ability and composure on the ball immediately impressed
at trials and he quickly won a regular place in the Reserves. Dave is
one of the few freshers in recent history to make an impact on the 1st
team.
JOHN HALL (MID/FORWARD) Debut
2003
By the most fortunate of circumstances, John was spotted playing tennis
at Benson Park during pre-season training and was looking for a team
in the area. John was a player who knew Cav from Newcastle University
days. John has proved himself to be the ultimate team man and a totally
committed player, travelling from Teeside for games and training, and
willingly filling in at any position but he is at his best at centre
forward.
DAVID
ALEXANDER (MIDFIELD/FORWARD) Debut 2001
When gifted Ulsterman David joined the club 2 seasons ago he moved quickly
through the ranks to win a place in 1st team squad scored ten league
as a teenager. Possessing a wide range of technical and physical attributes
Dave has the talent to be a top quality player. His distribution improved
to match his penchant for show-boating. He becomee a Centurian, joining
that elite group of players who have played 100 games for the Green
and Black.
DANNY
SHERWOOD (CF) Debut 1998
The most prolific striker in the club's history, Danny has returned
to the Green and Black to start "enjoying it again". Danny
had scored 174 goals for the club prior to the season and will be looking
to break the 200 barrier by the end of it. Danny has been playing in
the Northern Alliance Premier League for the last season and bit and
proved himself capable of scoring at that level but he has come back
to where his heart is. With the talented teenager David Alexander and
Geordie whippet Jason Thompson challenging him for the two striking
positions, Danny knows he will have to work hard to wear his favourite
number 9 shirt.
JASON
THOMPSON (CF) Debut 2002
Geordie whippet, Jason learned his football many years ago under Paddy's
management in Heathfield School's Under 15 B team. By amazing coincidence
he has now arrived at the Green and Black. A diminutive striker with
a blazing turn of pace and quick feet, Jason has caused problems to
every defence he has encountered. Still very inexperienced at this level,
Jason has the potential to be a prolific scorer.
DAN CORCORAN
(FORWARD) Debut 2001
Diminutive winger Dan worked his way up to 1st team after starting in
the As, for whom he once bagged six in game and then he moved to the
Reserve teams, after impressing in fresher trials. Dan has worked hard
to establish himself in the 1st team, his pace and trickery on the give
sides a genuine option on the left.
KARL WILLIAMS (FORWARD)
Debut 2004
Striker Karl made a massive impression, joining the club at Easter of
his 1st year. Karl had been out with a cruciate ligament injury but
has quickly got back into goal scoring mode. He notched a hatrick on
his club debut for the B's and scored goals in his first two games for
the 1sts, all as substitute. He followed up with braces in his first
two starts for the Reserves. Karl has previously played for Bangor in
the Northern Ireland and definitely challenges for a 1st team place.
